Born and raised in Calgary, Jim has spent his entire life in the business of law. His father was a practicing lawyer before becoming a Queen’s Bench Justice until his retirement in 2012. After graduating at Mount Allison University, he attended the University of Wales and graduated with honours. Jim is in Court every day with over 140 reported cases including some of the most high-profile cases in Alberta, including: R. v. Wells, R. v. Paxton, R. v. Garland, R. v. Kang-Brown, R. v. Crowchild, R. v. Tudor, R. v. Bedi, R. v. Kim, R. v. Coward, R. v. Remple, R. v. Baccari, R. v. Lefrance, R. v. Radita, R. v. Dhillon, R. v. Morton, R. v. Wilson, R. v. Beaulieu, R. v. Dinh, R. v. Additionally, Jim serves as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta which is an elected group of lawyers and non-lawyers who supervise more than 10,000 lawyers and 500 students in Alberta.

  • R. v. T.R. (2020) Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta - Charge of sexual assault and choking involving witness credibility and search of cell phone data and corollary fact evidence. Reported decision and not guilty verdict.
  • R. v. Guenther (2019) Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta - Possession for trafficking drugs owned by other found in purse carried by client. Court found Crown could not prove guilt of drugs in purse nor in a jointly shared apartment.
  • R. v. G.W. (2019) Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, Jury trial - Jury acquittal of individual in date rape case involving expert evidence on autism and how the Jury can use this in determining innocence.
